First Time Coming to Carlsbad, California – Did You Know?
Former sailor, John Frazier, dug a well in the area in 1880 and started offering his water at the local train station. That whistle-stop quickly became known as Frazier’s Station. A second fresh-water well was tested and the water was found to be chemically similar to water found in the most renowned spas in the world, which is why the town was named after a well-known Spa in the Bohemian town of Karlsbad.
German-born merchant named Gerhard Schutte and partners Samuel Church Smith, D.D. Wadsworth and Henry Nelson would later take advantage of the discovery and form the Carlsbad Land and Mineral Water Company. The town’s name of “Carlsbad” soon followed and visitors were drawn in by the major marketing campaign that ensued. The 1880s saw a period of growth, and even when neighboring land prices fell, the community’s agricultural lands helped it to survive.
City planners and growth managers are assisted by the dividing of the city into four quadrants. The northwest quadrant of Carlsbad includes the downtown “Village”, what is called “Olde Carlsbad” and the Barrio. “The Barrio” is the area near downtown Carlsbad that was settled by Latinos in the early 20th century. The northeast quadrant is mostly large-lot, single-family homes and is located east of El Camino Real and north of Palomar Airport Road. The most recently developed southeast quadrant contains the largest number of dwelling units of the four quadrants and is located east of El Camino Real and south of Palomar Airport Road. It includes La Costa Resort and Spa. Along the Pacific Ocean to the south of the center of the city is where the southwest quadrant is, and it includes the Aviara resort neighborhood. It is found west of El Camino Real and south of Palomar Airport Road.
Carlsbad is 7 miles of Pacific Ocean coastline in, with a total area of 39.1 square miles. It is an affluent coastal resort city in the northern region of San Diego County in Southern California. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has 1.4 square miles (3.55%) of water, and the majority of that water is contained within three lagoons and one lake.
The northern area of the city is part of a tri-city area consisting of Northern Carlsbad, southern Oceanside and western Vista form a tri-city area in the northern part of the city. Most of Carlsbad’s attractions and general city area have been annexed from unincorporated neighboring areas from the 1970s.
QUALITY OF LIFE
