YESTERDAY
Located on the Pacific Ocean, Del Mar is aptly named, with a Spanish translation of “of the sea” or “by the sea”.  The 338 acres was purchased by Colonel Jacob Taylor from Enoch Talbert in 1885, motivated by visions of a seaside resort for the rich and famous.

During World War II, the United States Navy operated a Naval Auxiliary Air Facility for blimps.

Every summer, the Del Mar Horse Races are hosted on the Del Mar Racetrack.

QUALITY OF LIFE
The San Diego, California community of Torrey Pines is located south of Del Mar and north of La Jolla, and is where you can find Torrey Pines State Beach.  The landscape is made picturesque by coastal erosion from the adjacent Torrey Pines State Reserve.  The location is a local favorite among surfers and remains a quintessential Southern California beach. It is at the bottom of 300 foot sandstone cliffs of white and golden stone, with a greenish layer sometimes visible towards the very bottom.  The cliffs end at the north end of the beach and Los Peñasquitos Lagoon, a salt marsh estuary, empties there into the ocean.  The county highway crosses the entrance, and there is limited free parking along the beach.
