First Time Coming to San Diego, California – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY
For over 10,000 years, the San Diego area has been inhabited by the Kumeyaay people and the original inhabitants were known as the San Dieguito and La Jolla people.  Sailing beneath the flag of Castile, Portuguese- born explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European visitor to the region and claimed the bay as “San Miguel” for the Spanish Empire in 1542.  San Diego became a part of the United States after the Mexican-American War in 1850, when California gained admission to the union.

At the base of Presidio Hill, Old Town San Diego State Historic Park was once the original town of San Diego, but was not the best location due to its distance from the water.  Current Downtown San Diego was established in the late 1860s due to its convenient location for shipping on the San Diego Bay, and is today known as “Old Town”.

TODAY
Current estimates show that 1,322,553 people live in San Diego.  It is the economic center of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area and the San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos metropolitan area, with main engines being tourism, manufacturing, international trade and military and defense-related activities.  San Diego has a long time association with the U.S. Navy and is currently emerging as a biotechnology and healthcare development center.  Residents enjoy the year-round mild climate, numerous beaches, and natural deep-water harbor that mark the area.

The presence of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), with the affiliated UCSD Medical Center, has helped make the area a center of research in biotechnology.

PRIME LOCATION
The Farmer’s Almanac sites San Diego as one of the top ten best climates, and The Weather Channel places it in the top two best summer climates.  San Diego’s city limits contain numerous nature preserves which include Torrey Pines State Reserve, Mission Trails Regional Park, and Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve.  The County notes the presence of 492 species of birds, making it one of the most bird populated areas of the United States.  Forbes magazine rates San Diego ninth of the top ten safest cities of the U.S.  It is America’s sixth largest city, but still retains a small town feel.  San Diego is quite educated and clean and it bills itself as “America’s Finest City”.

QUALITY OF LIFE
San Diego is found 2 hours south of San Diego and is a tourist destination with its numerous places of interest, amazing scenery, and great weather.  It is home to the first Mission, the downtown Gaslamp Quarter, the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and the Chargers of the NFL and Gulls of the IHL.  The airport is conveniently located right near downtown, and it is a good city for walking.  It also boasts a great trolley system and has public transit that will take you all the way to Tijuana.  San Diego’s location makes it an ideal home to many military bases, one being the largest naval air station on the West Coast.

North of downtown, you will find the San Diego Zoo inside Balboa Park.  The zoo centers on animal study and conservation and prides itself on creating habitats as similar as possible as would be found in the wild.  It is the only U.S. zoo to feature pandas.  Balboa Park itself is the largest urban park in the United States and is home to 15 museums.
