First Time Coming to San Marcos, California – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY
In the 1880s, German and Dutch immigrants started moving into the area.  In 1883 John H. Barham founded the first town in the area a few miles south of the early settlement.  By the next year, the town of Barham had a blacksmith, post office, feed store and a newspaper that came out weekly.  It was in 1887 that the San Marcos Land Company bought most of the Couts family’s San Marcos land and divided the land into tracts. The beautiful hills there were very attractive to new home-seekers.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the main San Marcos business was farming. By the mid-20th century, poultry production and dairy became a large part of the town’s business.  When the first water from the Colorado River arrived, San Marcos experienced a period of growth with the founding of several small businesses.  The population spiked to 2,500.

TODAY
The presence of the California State University, San Marcos, has brought more industry to the city, particularly in the hi-tech sector.   The area is now seen as the educational hub of San Diego North due to Palomar Community College, California State University San Marcos and award winning school districts.  Other nearby colleges, universities, and several employee skills training opportunities are also easily commutable.  One of the largest school districts in San Diego County, the San Marcos Unified School District has 19 schools with diverse educational programs for kindergarten through adult education students.

The 200-acre Palomar College campus is located in northern San Marcos.  It is a member of the California Community Colleges system and is a public two-year community college, enrolling approximately 30,000 full-time and part-time students.   A giant letter P (for “Palomar”) Its notable landmark, a giant letter “P”, is visible from miles away on the hillside above the campus.

PRIME LOCATION
In the North County section of San Diego County, California, one will find San Marcos, a suburb with a population of about 83,781.  It is best known for being the home of California State University, San Marcos, to anyone outside the San Diego area.  The city’s borders are Escondido to the east, Carlsbad to the west, Encinitas to the Southwest and Vista to the northwest.

San Marcos is located at 33°8′31″N 117°10′13″W.   The United States Census Bureau reports the city as having a total area of 24.4 square miles, with 24.4 square miles of land and 0.02 square miles of water.

Recent years have seen miles of trails constructed to facilitate biking throughout the city, and San Marcos has also become known for a plethora of open space and parks.  The top of Double Peak Park has a panoramic view of northern San Diego County and is also the highest coastal peak in the county.  A clear day reveals glimpses of the nearby San Bernardino Mountains in San Diego and the skyscrapers in downtown San Diego.
