First Time Coming to Tijuana, California – Did You Know?

Tijuana is the largest of Baja California’s cities. Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century when they were mapping California’s coastline. In 1889, the city was founded, and by the 1920s , during the prohibition, the attraction of gambling and drinking brought in many US visitors. As tourists began flocking here, and Mexicans decided to make this their home, the population grew steadily. Today over a million people reside in Tijuana.

You can learn all about the areas’ history at the Tijuana Cultural Center. Aside from the large educational museum, you will also find restaurants, music, theater, movies and art exhibits.

The Tren Turistico, or tourist train makes weekend trips to some of the local tourist sites and restaurants. It is a nice relaxing way to see the area.

If you enjoy shopping, the El Popo Market is the place to go. Locals and tourists alike frequent these shops, and the variety of items available is plentiful. There are specialty stores of every kind, where you can find mouth-watering candies and chocolates, cheeses of all kinds, peppers and herbs and spices, and a beautiful array of piñatas everywhere.

Another shopping option is Mercado Hildago. Whether you are shopping for fresh fruit and vegetables, cooking supplies, clothes or just want to pick up a few souvenirs, this is the most popular market to browse.

The shops are great if you like to bargain, as the shop owners like to deal with you so you can get the best price for what you are seeking. Whether you are purchasing or just sightseeing, the marketplace is a great place to spend an afternoon.

The Museo del Trompo is a great museum for the kids. They have dozens of hands on activities for children, such as games, instruments, and science exploration. Take some great family pictures with fun backgrounds and enjoy all the fun the museum has to offer.

There are several movie theaters if you just want to catch a flick. The Cinepolis Theater has awesome comfortable seats, great movies with subtitles, and even food delivered to you while you watch the movie! A great option for those rainy afternoons.

If you want to head to the beach, Playas de Tijuana has a boardwalk, restaurants and is not an overcrowded touristy beach. You may spot dolphins playing in the surf, or hear some live music. Be sure to check out the shrimp and swordfish tacos which get rave reviews!

Nightlife won’t disappoint you in Tijuana. Coko Bongo is known for some Spanish music and lots of fun, and Sotano Suizo is the place to go if you want some awesome food while you party.

Tijuana is located about 20 minutes from the US border, and about twice that far from the coastline of the Pacific Ocean. It is a definite cultural experience if you want to learn some new customs or just check out the local attractions. If you are looking for something different to do, take a day trip to Tijuana and check it out.
