First Time Coming to Chula Vista, California – Did You Know?

Following the Sweetwater Dam completion in 1888, the irrigated farming lands of Chula Vista became the largest lemon-growing center of the world for a time.  California approved the incorporation of the city of Chula Vista in November of 1911.   The landscape of orchard groves was forever changed by the relocation of the Rohr Aircraft Corporation to the city in the beginning of 1941, months preceding the Pearl Harbor attack.  Chula Vista’s population more than tripled between 1940 and 1950 and many factory workers and servicemen stayed in the area, eventually overtaking the produce fields and citrus groves as it became one of the largest communities in the county of San Diego.

Chula Vista had 200,000 residents in 2003, making it San Diego’s second largest city.  Major developments Otay Lake Reservoir and Otay valley near the Olympic Training Center indicate the continual fast paced growth of Chula Vista.  Next on the city’s agenda is to develop the bayfront.

Chula Vista boasts one of the nation’s few year-round U.S. Olympic Training centers, so has swiftly become a special tourist destination.  2006 marked a time when city officials met to discuss a new stadium to be built there as a home for the San Diego Chargers, but in 2009 the Chargers removed the city as a possibility.  Chula Vista is best known as a bedroom community, but it is also home to some large employers like Scripps Memorial Hospital and Goodrich Aerostructures.

Bordered by the mountains on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west, Chula Vista spans 50 square miles and has a population of 230,000 people.  The rough Spanish translation of Chula Vista is “beautiful view”, and visitors unanimously agree that the city is aptly named.  It lies seven miles from downtown San Diego and the Mexican border, making it one of the United States most culturally and economically rich areas.

Chula Vista’s hallmark is exemplary planning, providing excellent living choices through master planned and established communities with six lane boulevards and a north/south toll road.  The city offers affordable housing to estate homes, top-notch golf courses, beautiful parks, and the scenic marina.  It is popular for its shopping, dining, leisure and business opportunities.

Points of interest include the J Street Harbor, the Chula Vista Nature Center, the Third Avenue Village, the Olympic Training Center, and Knott’s Soak City – a favorite of families in the community and beyond.  The Lemon Festival, Chula Vista Rose Festival, and the Starlight Parade are a few of the cultural events hosted in downtown Chula Vista.  The only live theater in South Bay, San Diego, can be found at the On Stage Playhouse of Chula Vista.  The first major concert facility to the area is the Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre for the performing arts.
