First Time Coming to Imperial Beach, California – Did You Know?

Imperial Beach was founded in 1887, with a name borrowed from Imperial County, California, a desert climate found 100 miles east.  In the late 1880s, farmers and land owners from Imperial Valley came to the area in search of cooler weather during the summer months. In March 1887, over 2,000 laborers arrived in nearby Coronado, California to construct the largest resort at the time, the Hotel del Coronado.  Many of the laborers lived for the duration in Imperial Beach and some would later make it their permanent home.

In 1956, the city incorporated to operate its own Mayor-council government that provided city fire department service and policing by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Imperial Beach maintains its small residential feel, despite the large population surrounding the city.

Aspiring to be more visitor-friendly and commercially viable, Imperial Beach has undergone a significant makeover in the last ten years, and in 2004, began implementing a community redevelopment plan to improve the commercial corridor along Seacoast Drive and Palm Avenue.  Yet, Imperial Beach remains a highly residential city with few hotel or motel accommodations for visitors aside from a few smaller hotels.  Future city plans will allow for construction of additional hotels along the beach areas on Seacoast Drive, and after many years of plans, the demolition of the Seacoast Inn located off Seacoast Drive began in 2010.  Construction is now underway on the  new 22 million dollar Seacoast Inn, a 78-room, four-story, upscale Mediterranean-style resort with restaurant, spa and conference facilities on the  oceanfront lot, due to be completed by October 2013.

The city has a large military population and is home to NOLF Imperial Beach, the US Navy’s Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach.

Imperial Beach ranked below the national average in crime statistics in all areas reported by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department report in 2008.

The residential beach city of Imperial Beach, is located in San Diego County, California, with a population of 26,324 in 2010.  It is the most southern beach city in on the west coast of the United States in the Southern California, South Bay area of San Diego County.  It is 14.1 miles south of San Diego’s downtown and 5 miles northwest of downtown Tijuana, Mexico.

Summer temperatures are often in the upper 70s and winter temperatures in the 60s in this Mediterranean climate. The comfortable year round temperatures mean many homes in Imperial Beach are built without air conditioning, which can be unusual in much of California.  Imperial Beach is often 10 degrees cooler than San Diego County’s inland areas.

Imperial Beach employs a year round lifeguard staff on its nearly 4 miles of beach, which includes a dog friendly area.  Beach volleyball, surfing and body boarding are common activities in Imperial Beach, and are concentrated in the areas to the north and south of the Imperial Beach Pier and the Boca Rio beach break, which is one of San Diego County’s best surf spots.  San Diego Magazine calls the Boca Rio beach break the second best surfing location in the county, following Black’s Beach and the Scripps Canyon area near La Jolla.

Border Field State Park is the most southern beach on the west coast, where beachgoers in the United States are allowed to correspond verbally with beachgoers in Mexico.

The Imperial Beach Farmer’s Market remains the only beach front farmer’s market in San Diego County, and can be found at Pier Plaza every Friday afternoon (from November to March) and (from April to October).
