First Time Coming to Mira Mesa, California – Did You Know?

Mira Mesa was used by the United States Army as a test area around the time of World War II.  In addition to this, the surrounding area was used by the Navy as a bombing range.

The city has very much been influenced by the military located at adjacent NAS Miramar.  It separated Mira Mesa, the northernmost community, from the rest of the city for many years.  As the location of the Navy’s Top Gun School for over 30 years, the city became where most of the pilots made their homes.
The city’s close proximity to major employers like UC San Diego, MCAS Miramar, Qualcomm, and dozens of biotech and pharmaceutical companies has brought about extensive expansion to accommodate the thousands of new residents that were attracted in the 1990s. Many commercial and industrial centers have also been constructed within the Mira Mesa area.

Mira Mesa has a significant concentration of Asian-American residents, mostly Filipino and Vietnamese people, in addition to a wide variety of groups from India that reside there.

Once simply a residential area to support Naval Air Station, Miramar, Mira Mesa has grown into the largest community in San Diego since it was established in 1950.

The community provides many shopping and recreational opportunities, business buildings with technology facilities and office space, and residential zoned areas.  Ethnic cuisines and restaurants, traditional dining, eight community parks, teen and senior centers, an ice arena, an aquatic complex, multiple shopping centers, and a state-of-the-art movie theater are some of the many amenities of the city.

There are approximately 80,000 residents in the city with a median income around $63,000 per year.  There are 23,000 homes in the community, and the median age is 32.4 years old.

Mira Mesa is a large suburb of San Diego, California, situated on the southern edge of the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve with a northern boundary of MCAS Miramar.

Interstate 15 borders Mira Mesa to the east, and Interstate 805 to the west.  Mira Mesa Boulevard runs east to west, and acts as a main road in Mira Mesa, linking Interstates 15 and 805.  The west end of the city is a business and technology park that is often called “Sorrento Mesa”, and it is a major employment area for San Diego.

The Mira Mesa Street Fair, sponsored by the Mira Mesa Town Council, is held the third Saturday in September on Camino Ruiz just west of Mira Mesa Community Park.  A Fourth of July parade runs down Mira Mesa Boulevard, turning on Camino Ruiz.  An evening fireworks display accompanied by music from the radio station KyXy 96.5 is held at Mira Mesa Senior High School.

During the warm-weather months over 100 bikers are attracted to the Thursday night motorcycle gatherings just off of Mira Mesa Blvd (Albertson’s/Home Depot shopping center).  Locals call it “Mira Mesa Bike Night”.
