First Time Coming to Oceanside, California – Did You Know?

It was Andrew Jackson Myers, an Illinois native living in the San Joaquin Valley, who moved onto the original town site land for Oceanside in 1882.  The land was later incorporated on July 3, 1888, and the early 21st century city hall stands on the property that was once the Myers homestead.

Oceanside was a 6-mile beach town in the 20th century, and downtown residential areas were built in the 1890s. Some 1920s and 1930s South Oceanside buildings and developments east of Interstate 5 that were built after WWII are of historical value and are remodeled or preserved.

In 1942 Marine Base Camp Pendleton was established, and it continues to house U.S. Armed forces personnel.  The 1950s wartime industry of WWII brought an ammunition manufacturing facility to the city.  Since 1970, Oceanside decided to focus on suburban development and options for relatively affordable housing.  The city still has a reputation as a place of value and appreciation along with a good vacation home market.

The thriving community of Oceanside provides modern city conveniences without the disadvantages of a larger city.  It may seem that the proximity of Camp Pendleton and tourism are the sole mainstays of Oceanside’s economy, but the portfolio is much more diverse.  The city offers and incentive plan and low property tax to encourage new investment in the city.  Biotech and medtech companies, sporting and recreational goods manufacturers, and agriculture are part of the economic landscape.  Tomatoes, avocados, citrus fruits, flowers and nursery stock thrive in Oceanside’s warm climate and their cultivation contributes to San Diego County’s major agricultural output.

September of 1987 was the time of dedication of the city’s sixth pier, just before the 1988 Oceanside Centennial Celebration.  A new transit center was built in 1983, and 1989 brought a new Civic Center.

In a central location between San Diego and San Diego, you will find Oceanside, California — the most northern city of San Diego County.  Oceanside has perfect weather year-round, 3.5 miles of beach, and a 1,000 boat harbor.  It has the largest of the California Missions, a number of regional museums, and offers easy access to all other Southern California attractions.  A tri-city area is formed by the cities of Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista.  Oceanside is the third largest city in San Diego County.

Oceanside is just 83 miles south of San Diego and 35 miles north of San Diego, making it a fantastic location that has proximity to all major southern California destinations, yet can keep its autonomy and coastal beauty.

Oceanside has a number of attractions for locals and visitors alike.  An aerial view of the coast presents a notable projection from land into sea that is the Oceanside Pier.  First built in 1888, the Oceanside Pier is the longest wooden pier appearing on the entire western U.S. coastline at 1,954 feet.  Also in Oceanside, the Rosicrucian Fellowship is found in its historic district of Mount Ecclesia.  It is famous for its unique architecture and nature grounds and gardens that can be strolled.  The Alta California mission, Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, also finds its home in Oceanside.
