First Time Coming to Point Loma, California – Did You Know?

The peninsula of Point Loma was discovered back in 1542 when a Portuguese explorer arrived from Mexico to charter new land on the west coast. This area of California has been often called the place where California began. This peninsula became an ideal spot for military bases and shipping ports, and the planting of eucalyptus and avocados began. Currently over 47,000 residents call Point Loma their home.

Point Loma has many historic areas and landmarks, the most famous being the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. The light was first lit in 1855, and in 1891 they stopped using it due to the fact that the heavy fog in the area sometimes made it invisible to incoming ships. A new lighthouse was constructed in a more favorable location.

Some of the best attractions you will see in the area are provided by nature. Check out some of the exciting things Point Loma has to show you.
The sunset cliffs are located on the west side of Point Loma’s peninsula and are a wonderful sight to see. Dinosaur fossils are hidden among these cliffs, some dating back 75 million years. Surfers love the area for the awesome waves, and the glorious sunsets that gave the spot its name are definitely worth viewing. An occasional gray whale makes its way through this area, and if you are lucky you may spot one.

Another awesome natural sight is the Point Loma tide pools. Visit at low tide and you can see some fantastic sea creatures in their natural habitat. Bring the kids for a fun time and a great learning experience. Some of the creatures you may see are crabs, starfish, sea anemones, sea urchins, and occasionally an octopus!

The peninsula was also the perfect geographical place to set up defense during both World Wars. It provided a natural barrier to protect the land behind it, and for this reason bunkers and other stations were constructed here.

Cabrillo National Monument is where it all began. Learn the history of the area when that first explorer set foot on this land. Here you can see most of the landmarks listed above, do some hiking, or just relax and take in the spectacular views.

Sightseeing can work up an appetite, but Point Loma is ready to satisfy. Whether you are in the mood for American food, Indian, Japanese or Italian, you can find an eatery to fulfill your cravings. From delis to smoothie bars, burgers to fine dining, Point Loma has plenty of choices.
If you want to head out on the water, sailing, cruising and sport fishing are also popular here. You may see dolphins, walrus or even whales on your excursion.

Point Loma is a wonderful place to step out of the busy city and enjoy nature. Located about 20 minutes from San Diego, it’s close enough to take a trip into the city for a day trip. Visit the San Diego Zoo or one of many other larger attractions. But if the busy city is not your thing, Point Loma is perfect for relaxing, checking out some breathtaking scenery, and gazing at some of natures wonders.
