First Time Coming to San Carlos, California – Did You Know?

The Native American tribe known as the Lamchins originally occupied this territory, until 1769 when the Spanish settlers arrived. The land was bountiful for hunting and the water full of fish, and plenty of oak trees were scattered about.

By 1900, streets began to be constructed and the city began to grow into what it is today. Almost 30,000 people now reside in San Carlos.

Outdoor activities in the area include Big Canyon Park, which is a great place for jogging, hiking or just a relaxing stroll. Dogs are welcome and seem to enjoy the woodsy hike, though for some the hilly drop-off can be intimidating.

For a more kid-friendly place, choose one of the other nearby parks. Burton Park has awesome play structures, a fenced in kiddy area, dog park and picnic and barbecue areas. There are also baseball fields, batting cages, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a water play area for those super-hot days.

Laureola Park has all of the features above, plus a horseshoe and bocce ball area. Crestview Park also has an excellent kids play area, with unique features such as a trampoline and a giant peanut butter and jelly sandwich to play on!

The San Carlos Museum is a great place to learn the history of the area. Browse artifacts from the Indian and Spanish eras, the 1888 train depot, and see some amazing aerial photos taken in 1947.

The Hiller Aviation Museum is great for young and old alike. Here you can view all sorts of flying machines, test your skill on flight simulators, and let the kids sit in the giant 747. There are plenty of hands-on activities for the kids to keep them entertained.

If you happen to be visiting the area around the Christmas season, don’t miss out on Christmas Tree Lane. This two-block area shows their Christmas spirit in a giant way. You can see lights and displays of all sorts. It is said that purchasing a residence in this area comes with the agreement to join in the festivities and agree to the massive crowds that show up this time of year. Don’t miss out on photos with Santa and the Grinch, and make sure you get some hot chocolate!

The city of San Carlos offers a variety of coffee houses and juice bars, as well as ice cream or frozen yogurt eateries. Shopping boutiques and quaint shops can be found throughout the town, and the farmer’s market is a popular destination. Here you can stroll through 60 booths of fresh local produce, flowers, local artists, and hear some talented musicians.

San Carlos is located close to the Bayshore Freeway, otherwise known as highway 101, and is about a 45 minute drive away from San Francisco. Take a day trip into the big city and see the famous Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay. Take a cable car ride up and down the awesome streets. Visit the island of Alcatraz or go to Fisherman’s Wharf or Chinatown. Plenty of excitement is only a short drive away.
