First Time Coming to Solana Beach, California – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
In 2003, this tranquil coastal town made news by becoming the first city in the Continental United States to enact a smoking ban on its public beaches. Many other coastal Californian towns have since followed suit in the banning of smoking on their beaches. Solana Beach was the last coastal community to ban alcohol on the beach in North San Diego County in a unanimously approved action by the City Council.
The city was again in the national spotlight in 2008, when a retired veterinarian – and 38-year resident – Dr. David Martin, suffered a fatal injury from an extremely rare great white shark bite while swimming with a group about 150 yards off shore near Solana Beach’s Fletcher Cove. He was 66 years old. The group of swimmers had begun their swim at Tide Beach Park, north of the incident. It was noted that surfers in the area of Fletcher Cover saw harbor seals in the water, and there was a wounded seal on the beach at Fletcher Cove just before the attack. This is a typical sign of sharks feeding in the area. Contributing factors to the attack are increases in seal population along the Southern California coast, and the seals’ tendency to swim in close proximity to humans.
TODAY
Solana Beach has a population of 12,867 and is an affluent city in San Diego County, California. This beautiful North San Diego County coastal city is known for shopping – having a mix of interesting art galleries and boutiques, furniture shops, surfing outfitters, and other one-of-a-kind stores. With sunshine just about every day and winters that are just a few degrees cooler, it has an ideal climate. During the summertime, the coastline is often hugged by fog and low clouds in the late evening and the wee hours of the morning, but this dissipates by midday.
With gorgeous bluffs overlooking the ocean, yet no beach access, Solana Beach started as a farming community. A gap was later cut out in the bluffs, providing access to the ocean. Crashing surf means that the three small beaches of Solano Beach are better suited to surfers and body boarders than to sunbathers.
San Diego Association of Governments cites the median household income in 2005 at $101,122.
PRIME LOCATION
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.6 square miles. This small beach community is home to over 12,000 residents. Solano Beach is bordered by the community of Cardiff-by-the-Sea to the north, the Pacific Ocean is to the west, and the City of Del Mar to the south. Rancho Santa Fe is an unincorporated village to the east.
Eden Gardens (also known as La Colonia), is a neighborhood that is one of the oldest residential areas of Solana Beach. Created by Mexican farmers who were hired by the owners of large ranches in Rancho Santa Fe, it was formed in the 1920s. Wanting their families nearby, they lived in this region called La Colonia (the colony). The name Eden Gardens was a later moniker by a land developer who thought it a good marketing tool. A number of residents still refer to the area as La Colonia, and famous residents include Chicano rapper Lil Rob and comedian Rene Sandoval, both born and raised in the community.
QUALITY OF LIFE
Solano Beach is just about a 30 minute drive north from downtown San Diego. The city has a bustling train station that serves both Amtrak and the Coaster, and is one of three in San Diego County. The award winning Fletcher Cove Park is a place you can find locals dropping by to watch the sunset daily.
For those looking to enjoy the beach, eclectic shops, great dining, golfing, nightlife, and nearby hiking, it is a popular destination.
